GIS and Employment

GIS is becoming big business. A recent study by Natural Resources Canada states that

There are some 2,450 firms making up the geomatics industry that contributed $2.3 billion to Canada’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

Furthermore,

Companies in the sector are mostly small — nearly 75% having fewer than 50 employees

These facts show that GIS is moving from being the territory of large organizations and governments to small organizations. As GIS becomes more affordable, more companies are able to get into the field, and thus to offer employment in GIS.
